About John's Handbooks
Handbooks 1 to 4 and 6 to 8 contain practical ideas and examples in the same vein as his Advocacy Club courses. Handbook 5, Mediation, features chapters and commentaries from senior mediators, in lieu of exercises.
John writes in the informal, but informative, language that he favours both in his teaching style and in the blog posts on this website. Articling students and novice and junior lawyers, especially those studying and working in the field of litigation, will find these books of interest. The practical examples and hands-on exercises will also make these books excellent tools for law school and institutional use.

Reviews
Thank you for getting me your book on mediation (Mediation for Civil Litigators - Issues and Solutions). Unfortunately we didn’t settle, but the book gave me great insight into the mediation process. I was able to put the client at ease going into the mediation; she had a good understanding of what it would look like, which made the day much easier on her. And while we didn’t settle we did make some good progress in the case. Again your teachings saved my day, I can’t tell you how much the book helped!

Irwin Law released a Young Advocates series last summer, with titles in interviewing, discoveries, writing, mediation, and the courtroom. I’ve already read half of the series, and I find they reflect the majority of questions and concerns that young lawyers frequently pose to me. They include exercises and scenarios which realistically depict situations which emerge in litigation. The series are written by John Hollander, who teaches an advanced advocacy course at the University of Ottawa.

From University of Ottawa law students about Introduction to Trial Advocacy:
- Easy to read book with practical examples. A great resource for junior litigators!
- This handbook is very straight to the point, full of useful techniques, and most of all free to download. Thank you for providing it to us!
- Very easy to read. The examples helped to illustrate the concepts being taught.
- 1) Chapters are short and clear
2) Helpful "tips" for presentations
3) Good examples / demonstration case - Straightforward, practical, can apply concepts easily, couples well with the podcasts and in-class exercises. - the demonstration cases at the end of each chapter explain the main concepts clearly.
- It was one of the best reading material I have been assigned in law school because I actually read it all! It was just the right amount of information for us to take in the new skills we were learning and then put them in practice. It was well-organized and the writing style was easy to understand and to the point. I will likely read through it again over the next few years as I start my career.
- The Handbook is concise and to the point. I will definitely hang on to it.
- This is the best written material I have been provided in law school. It was useful and relevant to each day. Very useful. Very practical.
