Accident Benefits
August 12 and 13, 2019

Picture
The SABS Law Symposium washeld August 12th and 13th, 2019, at KPMG Forensic Services offices at 150 Elgin Street #1800 in Ottawa.

Attendees learned the tools of the trade to succeed in this area of law. Attendees took an in-depth look at some of the common tools and resources used to negotiate settlements at LAT case conferences, examine and cross-examine expert witnesses and present submissions before LAT adjudicators effectively. Common issues in dispute including entitlement to income replacement benefits and determination of catastrophic impairment formed the focus of the case study and practical exercises.

In the two-day session participants met leaders in the field. They participated in small-group seminars to practice the techniques and receive practical feedback from experts. Participants used a case study (complied by Bianca Bielicki) to prepare for negotiations, examine witnesses, used a financial expert report to examine and cross-examine experts, and made presentations as if before an LAT adjudicator. They learned techniques to deal with opposing counsel/parties to increase the chances of settlement and reduce the stress of litigation.

The agenda included:
  • Presentation of techniques by the legal experts.
  • Learning from and practising with KPMG Forensic experts.
  • Half-day session on professionalism (including EDI) issues.
  • CPD: 10 hours substantive, 3 hours professional, of which 1 hour EDI.
